As a result, a college in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/canada-flags\">Canada<\/a> is named after the conflict. And both Waterloos have flags.<\/p>\n<p>The mammoth number of troops deployed in 1815 needed flags to know where to march and whom to follow. National colors, regimental pennants and signal flags were deployed by all sides in the fight.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/A-regimental-flag-borne-by-the-Royal-Scots-at-Waterloo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/A-regimental-flag-borne-by-the-Royal-Scots-at-Waterloo-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"A regimental flag borne by the Royal Scots at Waterloo\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A regimental flag borne by the Royal Scots at Waterloo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In celebration of this year\u2019s Waterloo bicentennial, \u201c<span lang=\"en\">two fragile flags\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/scotland-flags\">Scotland<\/a> have been \u201ctaken out of storage for the first time in more than 80 years and given pride of place at Edinburgh Castle,\u201d according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotsman.com\">www.scotsman.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">The website includes a unique flag story from June 18, 1815. It tells of J<\/span><span lang=\"en\">ames Grant Kennedy, 16, who is \u201creputed to have had such a tight grip on the \u2018pike\u2019 of the Union Jack colour that a sergeant who tried to retrieve it had to carry both the soldier and the flag over his shoulder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/An-early-image-of-Napoleon-with-a-banner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/An-early-image-of-Napoleon-with-a-banner-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"An early image of Napoleon with a banner\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>An early image of Napoleon with a banner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A contemporary author has underscored the reality of the Waterloo violence by writing: \u201cDespite the colored uniforms, flags and bands, combat at Waterloo was bloody and brutal.\u201d Tens of thousands died in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>That battle, which changed European history, baptized a college in Canada. Shortly after the victory, a town in Ontario named itself Waterloo. In 1957, the University of Waterloo was created with just 74 students. Today, it has thousands of undergrads as well as an elaborate seal used on banners and flags.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Seal-of-University-of-Waterloo-with-its-motto-In-harmony-with-truth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Seal-of-University-of-Waterloo-with-its-motto-In-harmony-with-truth-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Seal of University of Waterloo with its motto, 'In harmony with truth\" width=\"227\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Seal of University of Waterloo with its motto, &#8216;In harmony with truth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The school\u2019s logo features three rampant lions and a chevron. The triple lions echo those on the Duke of Wellington\u2019s coat of arms. The colors are red and gold, and the school\u2019s motto is \u201cConcordia cum Veritate,\u201d meaning \u201cin harmony with truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university has another connection to flags: Douglas Wilhelm Harder, a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is fascinated by <a title=\"world flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/flags-of-the-world\">world flags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Wellingtons-coat-of-arms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Wellingtons-coat-of-arms-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wellington's coat of arms\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Wellington&#8217;s coat of arms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWorld history and world flags are of interest to me,\u201d he writes on his site, \u201cand I thought others may find [my clickable world map] to be useful. It is a compilation of many of the world\u2019s flags with well over 800 states (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/flags-of-the-world\">countries, nations<\/a>) and administrative divisions (states, provinces, territories, areas, districts, and the occasional city) represented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harder makes it easier to find flags.
