But do you also see an <a title=\"American flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a>? Based on these stories from the past, you should. The examples come from 150, 100 and 70 years ago.<\/p>\n<h3>1865<\/h3>\n<p>William Hoover, a Philadelphia fireman, left his job in 1862 to sign up with the 99th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Two years later, he was captured during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia. In 1865, due to exposure and \u201cbrutal treatment\u201d by his captors, Hoover died.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/A-fireman-around-the-1860s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/A-fireman-around-the-1860s-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"A fireman around the 1860s\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A fireman around the 1860s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Philly newspaper recorded that his wake was attended by relatives, friends, and fellow members of the Independence Hose and Steam Company. The newspaper added that \u201cthe old bell on the engine house tolled the sad news of his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a sign of his military service, Hoover\u2019s coffin was covered with an American flag.<\/p>\n<h3>1915<\/h3>\n<p>In Springfield, Missouri, children at a grammar school took part in a surprise fire drill, overseen by fireman from a nearby station. It wasn\u2019t the usual drill, however, because it included a <a title=\"flagpole\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flagpoles\">flagpole<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The students had been crestfallen when they learned that vandals had made off with the school\u2019s flagpole in the middle of the night, so the principal turned to the fire chief for assistance.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/George-Nigro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/George-Nigro-151x300.jpg\" alt=\"George Nigro\" width=\"151\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>George Nigro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A truck with an extension ladder arrived at the school, and the chief made sure the drill was held so that the kids were outside to see the replacement of the flagstaff. A ladder lifted a firemen to the top of the building to replace the pole and attach the roping so a banner could fly.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>1945<\/h3>\n<p>Eighty years after William Hoover died in the Civil War, another firefighter \u2013 George Nigro \u2013 succumbed in the line of duty while fighting during World War II. He was \u201ckilled in action\u2026in Germany,\u201d The New York Times reported, \u201cwhere he was a staff sergeant with the Eleventh Infantry.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Firemen-salute-as-a-plaque-honoring-George-Nigro-is-placed-on-the-firehouse-where-he-served.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Firemen-salute-as-a-plaque-honoring-George-Nigro-is-placed-on-the-firehouse-where-he-served-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"Firemen salute as a plaque honoring George Nigro is placed on the firehouse where he served\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Firemen salute as a plaque honoring George Nigro is placed on the firehouse where he served<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He had belonged to Engine Company 229 in Brooklyn, New York, where he served as a fireman for six years before enlisting in February 1944. Fewer than 13 months later, he died at 29.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper reported that the fire commissioner \u201cordered the <a title=\"American flag displayed at half-staff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/fly-flag-half-mast\">American flag displayed at half-staff<\/a> for five days on firehouses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, Nigro\u2019s mother attended a ceremony unveiling a plaque commemorating her son\u2019s sacrifice for his country. Recently, his name was also added to the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Wall in Albany, New York.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Picture a fireman.
