It was also the year a college named for the president was founded, a college that possesses a significant flag connected to his election.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lincoln-College-seal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lincoln-College-seal-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lincoln College seal\" width=\"124\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a>Chartered in 1865, Lincoln College was named for the 16th president. Located \u2013 where else? \u2013 in Lincoln, Illinois, the state where the president lived for many years and where he is buried. The college has the distinction of being the only institution of higher learning named for the president during his lifetime. Ground was broken for the first building on February 12, his last birthday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lincoln-College-in-1941.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lincoln-College-in-1941-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Lincoln College in 1941\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Lincoln College in 1941<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The town of Lincoln, named 12 years before the college\u2019s founding, proclaims that it\u2019s \u201cthe only city in the world named for and christened by Abraham Lincoln before\u00a0he became President.\u201d In fact, he was involved as a lawyer in chartering the town.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, a city named for the Great Emancipator became the location of a college named in his honor in the year that saw the end of his life.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lincoln-campaign-banner-Copyright-Lincoln-Heritage-Museum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Lincoln-campaign-banner-Copyright-Lincoln-Heritage-Museum-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"Lincoln campaign banner (Copyright Lincoln Heritage Museum)\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Lincoln campaign banner (Copyright Lincoln Heritage Museum)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And that brings us to a special flag connected to Lincoln. The Lincoln Heritage Museum, located at the college, has among its holdings many items related to the president, including furniture from his home in Springfield, Illinois, a campaign banner from his 1860 run for the presidency, and a rare flag.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Middletown-Flag-Copyright-Lincoln-Heritage-Museum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Middletown-Flag-Copyright-Lincoln-Heritage-Museum-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Middletown Flag (Copyright Lincoln Heritage Museum)\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Middletown Flag (Copyright Lincoln Heritage Museum)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The museum describes the campaign banner as \u201cone-of-a-kind\u201d and \u201cfeaturing an axe and a maul.\u201d It carries the words \u201cThe Nation\u2019s Choice\u201d and images connected to \u201cLincoln\u2019s presidential run\u2026.It was used\u00a0in several rallies\u2026and undoubtedly helped launch Lincoln from a grassroots candidate to a\u00a0national candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/A-flag-bedecked-Lincoln-campaign-flyer-from-1860.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/A-flag-bedecked-Lincoln-campaign-flyer-from-1860-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"A flag-bedecked Lincoln campaign  flyer from 1860\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A flag-bedecked Lincoln campaign flyer from 1860<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>he museum also houses a unique flag that was sewn by area women for the presidential campaign. Anne Moseley, acting director of the museum, said that it was made \u201cby ten to fifteen ladies from Middletown for the first Republican candidate\u201d for president. Middletown is near Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir sewing circle would meet once or twice a week,\u201d she continued. \u201cTheir husbands were friends of Lincoln, and since the women couldn\u2019t vote, they showed their support by going to rallies and speeches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flag they created is enormous, Ms. Moseley said, estimating it at eight feet by sixteen feet.
