Many times, that support was shown through images of the <a title=\"American flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American flag<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most striking shows <a title=\"Flags and Abraham Lincoln\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/flags-and-abraham-lincoln\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Abraham Lincoln<\/span><\/a> as a color-bearer surrounded by servicemen and a drummer boy. The drawing captures a moment that never happened. But, if not in person, then through his words, Lincoln repeatedly called on Unionists to rally \u2018round the flag.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Lincoln-with-his-rallying-flag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Lincoln-with-his-rallying-flag-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lincoln with his rallying flag\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Lincoln with his rallying flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The illustration came with a poem that began: \u201cRally once again;\/There are traitors in the camp, boys,\/And pirates on the Main;\/There are rebels in the front, boys,\/And foes across the sea,\/Who hate the proud republican\/And scoff at you and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words continued with an urgent call to \u201cRally round the Flag, Boys!\/Rally in your might;\/Let the nations see how freemen\/Can battle for the right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again and again, Harper\u2019s turned to such images and words to stir patriotic fervor. Articles and accompanying illustrations often focused on color-bearers, who led troops into battle, showing them the way toward the enemy and back to safety.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/A-Gallant-Color-Bearer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/A-Gallant-Color-Bearer-257x300.jpg\" alt=\"A Gallant Color-Bearer\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A Gallant Color-Bearer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a title=\"Bearing a flag into gunfire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/bearing-a-flag-into-gunfire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">color-bearers<\/span><\/a> were known for their bravery. They knew their chances of survival were low because enemy muskets picked them off in the hope of confusing and scattering troops who had neither guide nor guidon to follow. Medals of Honor were often bestowed on flag-bearers because their courage amid shot and shell ranked them as leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Harper\u2019s published an account of such bravery during the <a title=\"Flags fly amid battles\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/flags-fly-amid-battles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Battle of Gettysburg<\/span><\/a>. It was written by a surgeon with the 126th New York Volunteer Infantry. He said that \u201cduring the fight the colors had had five standard bearers, one of whom was killed, three wounded, and one escaped unharmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the flag itself, he wrote, \u201cOur colors came out of the fight unsullied, pierced seven times by the enemies\u2019 balls, and torn twice by his shells. Our flag was carried into the thickest of the fight; five times its bearers were struck down, yet never for [a] moment did its folds trail in the dust.
