But the centennial of his birth (Nov. 25, 1914) brings memories of how often he was associated with bunting, pennants and <a title=\"American flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American flags<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The anniversary also calls attention to another Joe DiMaggio, who is associated with flags because he loves to take photos of them.<\/p>\n<p>The original Joltin\u2019 Joe was a phenomenon from his first days in the minor leagues in his home town of San Francisco. In 1934, when he was on the Seals, the team celebrated five pennants from previous seasons. In his years with the team, he helped to lead it to many post-seasons, which came with red-white-and-blue bunting, <a title=\"Baseball pennants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/pennant-streamer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American League pennants<\/span><\/a> and <a title=\"Baseball Flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/sports-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">World Series flags<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his first season, a journalist reported, an \u201cardent group of Yankee supporters\u201d gathered in centerfield, behind DiMaggio, and unfurled an <a title=\"Italian flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/italy-flag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Italian flag<\/span><\/a>. Two years later, when the team faced the Chicago Cubs in the World Series, the ballplayers \u201cparaded\u2026to the <a title=\"flagpole\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flagpoles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">flagpole<\/span><\/a> where, to the strains of the \u2018<a title=\"National Anthem marks 200 years | The Star-Spangled Banner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/national-anthem-marks-200-years-star-spangled-banner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Star-Spangled Banner<\/span><\/a>,\u2019 Old Glory was hauled aloft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Yankees-fan-pennant.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Yankees-fan-pennant-300x116.jpg\" alt=\"Yankees fan pennant\" \/><\/a>The championships mounted up. Just three paragraphs into his 1948 autobiography, DiMaggio referred to his early years on the team as a time of \u201cwinning pennants hand over fist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he isn\u2019t the only Joe DiMaggio with a strong link to Old Glory. A professional photographer with that name specializes in many subjects, including the U.S. flag. On his blog, he wrote: \u201cM<span lang=\"en\">any photos are considered clich\u00e9s. The Empire State Building, the Arc de Triomphe, the Great Wall of China, Lady Liberty\u2026.You would think\u2026the American Flag would be a clich\u00e9, but not to me. The American Flag has beautiful colors, great design, balance and when the wind blows right it has powerful stance\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogjoedimaggio.com\/tag\/american-flag\/\">http:\/\/blogjoedimaggio.com\/tag\/american-flag\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>When the original Joe D died in 1999, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, responded by lowering its flag to half-staff.
