The observance would evolve into a national holiday full of <a title=\"American flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American flags<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en\">The reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country\u2019s service,\u201d Wilson proclaimed, \u201cand with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><span lang=\"en\">A year later, citizens of Georgia marked the occasion with speeches and a poem about the flag that included these words: \u201cThat flag, with constellated stars,\u2026like the rainbow in the storm, presages peace to man\u2026.Where\u2019er it floats, on land or sea,\u2026no stain its honor mars; and Freedom smiles, her fate secure, beneath its steadfast stars!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/U.S.-and-MIA-flags-fly-in-an-autumn-village-square-near-a-memorial-to-fallen-servicemen.-James-Breig-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/U.S.-and-MIA-flags-fly-in-an-autumn-village-square-near-a-memorial-to-fallen-servicemen.-James-Breig-photo-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"U.S. and MIA flags fly in an autumn village square near a memorial to fallen servicemen. (James Breig photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">In 1926, Congress officially recognized the annual observance when it passed a resolution to make national what more than half of the states were already doing. The Senate and House of Representatives asked the president to \u201cissue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and invit[e] the people\u2026to observe the day\u2026with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Armistice Day would not become a federal holiday until 1938 and would not be renamed Veterans Day until 1954. That was done so that those who served in World War II and Korea could be included in what had previously been a salute only to the heroes of the Great War.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Flags-and-a-tree-planting-marked-Armistice-Day-in-1919.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Flags-and-a-tree-planting-marked-Armistice-Day-in-1919-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"Flags and a tree planting marked Armistice Day in 1919\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Flags and a tree planting marked Armistice Day in 1919<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">That change was contained in a proclamation signed by President Dwight Eisenhower, who summoned all citizens to mark the occasion and \u201csolemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly.\u201d He also ordered government officials \u201cto arrange for the display of the flag of the United States on all public buildings on Veterans Day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Sixty years later, President Barack Obama continues the tradition of issuing a presidential proclamation each November. Last year, for instance, he urged \u201call Americans to recognize the valor and sacrifice of our veterans through appropriate <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">public ceremonies<\/span> and private prayers.
