{"id":169,"date":"2013-04-04T14:58:23","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T18:58:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/?p=169"},"modified":"2024-11-21T10:40:58","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T15:40:58","slug":"lincoln-raises-new-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/lincoln-raises-new-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"Lincoln raises new flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/plus.google.com\/104171654776999761706?rel=author\">James Breig<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As America marches toward the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversaries of the Battle of Gettysburg (in July) and the Gettysburg Address (in November), this space has begun sharing some stories about Abraham Lincoln and the <a title=\"American Flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. flag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, some of his flag-related speeches from 1861, while he was on his way to his first inauguration, were recounted. The place: the launching point of American history. It\u2019s not surprising, therefore, that Lincoln was invited to raise a flag at Independence Hall. Making the moment even more special was the flag itself. It carried a new star, representing the statehood of Kansas, which had been admitted to the Union on Jan. 29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen that flag was originally raised here,\u201d the president-elect said, \u201cit had but 13 stars. I wish to call your attention to the fact that, under the blessing of God, each additional star added to that flag has given additional prosperity and happiness to this country until it has advanced to its present condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he added: \u201cIts welfare in the future, as well as in the past, is in your hands.\u201d The remark drew cheers from the assembled people, who were well aware of the onrushing Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think,\u201d Lincoln continued, \u201cwe may promise ourselves that not only the new star placed upon that flag shall be permitted to remain there to our permanent prosperity for years to come, but additional ones shall from time to time be placed there, until we shall number\u2026five hundred millions of happy and prosperous people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the audience clapped loudly, Lincoln proceeded to what he called \u201cthe very agreeable duty assigned me\u201d \u2013 raising the new flag that now displayed 34 stars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By James Breig As America marches toward the 150th anniversaries of the Battle of Gettysburg (in July) and the Gettysburg Address (in November), this space has begun sharing some stories about Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. flag.
