After all, it has done so repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>When President Lincoln signed the document accepting the state into the Union 150 years ago, Nevadans came in waving nothing. As noted on its website, \u201cthe Legislature did not adopt the design of the first <a title=\"Nevada Flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/original-nevada-state-flag-of-1905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nevada flag<\/a> until 1905, more than 40 years after Nevada entered the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Gov. John Sparks and Col. Harry Day collaborated on that original \u2013 and rather ugly \u2013 standard. \u201c<\/span>It had a blue background with the words \u2018Nevada\u2019 in the center, \u2018silver\u2019 at the top, and \u2018gold\u2019 at the bottom,\u201d says the state\u2019s website. \u201cThirty-six silver and gold stars represented that Nevada was the 36th state admitted to the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Gov.-Sparks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Gov.-Sparks.jpg\" alt=\"Gov. Sparks\" width=\"220\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Gov. Sparks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Want to bet that they kept that one? You lose! Ten years after the first banner, the Legislature \u201ccreated a new official flag,\u201d designed by Clara Crisler of Carson City. She put 18 gold stars around \u201cNevada\u201d and 18 silver stars below the words \u201cAll for Our Country.\u201d She proudly waved her creation for only 14 years, and then it was time for another Nevada state flag to debut.<\/p>\n<p>In 1929, Don Louis Shellback III came up with the third design. Supplanting Crisler\u2019s gold stars were sprays of sagebrush and a scroll reading \u201cBattle Born\u201d to remind citizens that the state entered the Union during the Civil War.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Nevadas-current-flag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Nevadas-current-flag-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Nevada's current flag\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Nevada&#8217;s current flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>How much would you wager that Shellback\u2019s flag is the current one? The house wins again because, as the state\u2019s website explains, the \u201cLegislature approved a bill\u2026to alter the way that \u2018Nevada\u2019 is depicted on the <a title=\"State flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/american-states-territories-cities-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State flag<\/a>. Since October 1, 1991,\u2026\u2018Nevada\u2019 has been positioned underneath instead of interspersed between the points of the star.\u201d Credit for the fourth flag goes to Verne R. Horton.<\/p>\n<p>The Nevada state flag now consists of a deep blue field with symbols placed in the upper left corner: a single silver star; the slogan, \u201cBattle Born,\u201d atop the star; \u201cNevada\u201d written under the star; and sprigs of sagebrush with bright yellow blooms.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the current flag of Nevada, but the roulette wheel keeps spinning.
