There are several steps before it can be handed to a soldier or veteran. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a group photo (missing 3 people unfortunately).<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/star-makers.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/star-makers-600x304.jpg\" alt=\"star makers\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>When packages of flags arrive for Stars For Our Troops, they are stacked up and logged in so that we can send a thank-you and a couple of stars to the kind people who&#8217;ve sent us their old flags for this great cause. \u00a0Each box is opened and the flags inside are inspected to see if they are usable for the project. \u00a0Usable\u00a0<a title=\"American Flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American flags<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>made in the USA<\/strong>\u00a0and have\u00a0<strong>embroidered stars<\/strong>\u00a0that are about the height of a business card. \u00a0Any taller and they won&#8217;t fit into the baggies that we use, and won&#8217;t be convenient for carrying in the soldiers wallet or pocket.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/business-card-size.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/business-card-size-600x187.jpg\" alt=\"business card size\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Flags can be shipped to:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000; text-align: center;\">Attn: Stars for our Troops<br \/>\nGettysburg Flag Works<br \/>\n715 Columbia Turnpike<br \/>\nEast Greenbush, NY 12061<\/p>\n<p>Once all of the flags have been checked in, we cut the star field from the stripes. \u00a0It&#8217;s a process also used by the scouts during their\u00a0retirement ceremony. \u00a0Each star field is then washed to remove any dirt or allergens it&#8217;s collected during it&#8217;s flying life. \u00a0We do this for the health and comfort of not only the star-makers but also for the veterans and soldiers who will receive the stars. It also shines up the stars and gives them a new lease on life.<\/p>\n<p>When the star fields are clean and dry, it&#8217;s time to cut each star from the field. \u00a0This is a tedious process that our volunteers do at star parties &#8211; like this one &#8211; or at home. \u00a0It&#8217;s easiest on the hands when done in shorter times rather than all at once. \u00a0You can imagine how long it takes with 50 stars per field and at least 5 cuts per star!<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/triming-stars.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/triming-stars.jpg\" alt=\"triming stars\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Trimmed stars are saved up in bags and boxes for the next part of the process.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/box-of-stars.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/box-of-stars.jpg\" alt=\"box of stars\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Many of our star-makers have become experts at pouching the stars with the little notes into their plastic baggies. \u00a0It starts by laying out the notes face-down and placing a star on each one. \u00a0You will see that most embroidered stars have one side that&#8217;s &#8220;prettier&#8221; than the other. \u00a0We like to face the pretty side out so that side faces up when it is in the pouch.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ready-for-pouch.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ready-for-pouch.jpg\" alt=\"ready for pouch\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>And then each one goes into a plastic pouch.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/pouching-stars.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/pouching-stars.jpg\" alt=\"pouching stars\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s a lot of work but when you&#8217;re done, each and every pouched star will touch a life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For some veteran&#8217;s, it&#8217;s a thank-you that has been much too long in arriving. \u00a0For a deployed soldier it&#8217;s a reminder of the friends, family and even strangers thinking of them back home. Many hold these stars with them at all times, in pockets, wallets or helmets.
