Known as the Great War, it began 100 years ago amid waving \u2013 and burning \u2013 flags.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Artists-conception-of-the-assassination-of-two-royals.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Artists-conception-of-the-assassination-of-two-royals-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"Artist's conception of the assassination of two royals\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Artist&#8217;s conception of the assassination of two royals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Coincidentally, on the very same day, Idahoans focused on an <span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><a title=\"American flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American flag<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for a happier reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">On July 28, 1914, newspapers around the world reported the outbreak of the war in Europe. While the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife a month earlier by Serbians is often seen as the last straw of European foment that would lead to all-out war, the seizure of a flag was the first spark that ignited four years of slaughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Two Servian Steamers Seized by Austrians,\u201d screamed one headline, adding, \u201cThe Servian Colors Torn Down and the Austrian Flag Raised as a Starter\u201d to war. The ships belonging to Servia (now spelled Serbia) were boarded by Austrian troops and claimed for their nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Serbian-flag-in-19141.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Serbian-flag-in-19141-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Serbian flag in 1914\" width=\"202\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Serbian flag in 1914<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">On a steamship in the Atlantic on his way home from a visit to the U.S., Count Karolyi, who was head of the Hungarian Independent Party, told a reporter that \u201cthe situation would not have become so delicate\u201d as to lead to war had he been home. Now, he continued, \u201cAll true Hungarian patriots will\u2026rally to the flag.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">As more and more reports came in about what was happening overseas, some newspapers resorted to printing series of brief reports to keep up with the tumult. For example, \u201cSituations in Europe Told in Paragraphs\u201d was the headline in a Minnesota daily, and one of those paragraphs said that \u201cfive hundred Slav students burn <a title=\"Austria flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/austria-flag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austrian flag<\/a> in Paris streets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/WWI-Color-Guard-at-an-Army-camp.-America-woul-eventually-enter-the-conflict.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/WWI-Color-Guard-at-an-Army-camp.-America-woul-eventually-enter-the-conflict-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Color Guard at an Army camp. America would eventually enter the conflict<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">The United States would not become enmeshed in the world war until 1917, but it seemed inevitable to a Baltimore newspaper editor named A.S. Goldsborough. On the day the war began with torn-down and burning flags, he said that \u201ca flag means nothing unless it represents an idea and unless that idea is fulfilled by a people\u2026.<a title=\"The flag of Turkey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/turkey-flag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The flag of Turkey<\/a>\u2026is as much a flag as our own, but what a difference in their significance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Meanwhile, as cannon fire and trench warfare rocked Europe on that July 28, 1914, the people of Idaho were joyously marking the 80<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> anniversary of what they believed was the first time the American flag had been unfurled in the state-to-be, an event that occurred at Fort Hall, a trading post along the Oregon Trail.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some historians argue that the 20th century was shaped by World War I.
