That\u2019s because every American is being invited to sing the <a title=\"national anthem\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/which-anthem-is-national\/\">National Anthem<\/a> at 4 p.m. EDT on June 14.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">In addition, \u201c<a title=\"the star spangled banner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/star-spangled-banner-15-stars-15-stripes-choose-options\">The Star-Spangled Banner<\/a>\u201d &#8212; both the original manuscript of the words and the original flag &#8212; will be united for the first time to mark the 200<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> anniversary of the anthem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to what would become the National Anthem in September 1814 as he watched Fort McHenry in the Baltimore harbor being shelled by British naval vessels. The song, set to a melody written \u2013 ironically \u2013 by an Englishman, salutes the fort\u2019s flag, which survived a long nighttime bombardment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Remnants of that flag now hang at the National Museum of American History, a Smithsonian site in Washington, D.C. For a brief time this summer, June 14-July 6, the original manuscript of Key\u2019s words will be displayed alongside the banner.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">In addition to that first-ever coming together, plans are in place to mark the anthem\u2019s bicentennial with a <a title=\"national sing along\" href=\"http:\/\/anthemforamerica.smithsonian.com\/\">National Sing-Along<\/a> to take place throughout the U.S. on June 14.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Remnants-of-the-original-Star-Spangled-Banner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Remnants-of-the-original-Star-Spangled-Banner-300x266.jpg\" alt=\"Remnants of the original Star-Spangled Banner\" width=\"300\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Remnants of the original Star-Spangled Banner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en\">Two hundred years ago, Francis Scott Key, inspired by the sight of the flag\u2019s \u2018broad stripes and bright stars,\u2019 wrote a song that gave new significance to a national symbol and started a tradition through which Americans have invested the flag with their own meaning and memories,\u201d said John L. Gray, director of the museum, in a press release.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en\">He added that \u201cit is an honor for the museum to be the home of the Star-Spangled Banner and to preserve it for future generations.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en\">Raise It Up! Anthem for America\u201d is the title of the Flag Day celebration. Americans are encouraged to gather as families, club members, communities and other groups to sing \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d simultaneously with others across the nation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/First-printing-of-Keys-words-1814.-600x426.jpg\" alt=\"First printing of Key's words, 1814.\" width=\"600\" height=\"426\" \/><figcaption>First printing of Key&#8217;s words, 1814.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en\">Outside the museum in Washington, for example, people will crowd the National Mall for a massive sing-along with the hope of breaking a record for the largest group-sing ever.
