The event was D-Day, June 6, 1944, when Allied forces hit beaches on the coast of France with the intention of not stopping their progress until they ended Nazi Germany\u2019s reign over Europe.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Newspapers of June 6 and succeeding days, which included Flag Day on June 14, tell stories of flags both familiar and created for the occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>JUNE 6: <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">The headline on the Springfield Republican in Illinois told the story: \u201cAllies Drive Steadily Into France; One Town Falls; Nazis Fail To Hit.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/French-children-at-a-school.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/French-children-at-a-school-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"French children at a school in New York City salute their nation's flag on D-day.\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><figcaption>French children at a school in New York City salute their nation&#8217;s flag on D-day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">NBC heard,\u201d the accompanying article said, \u201cthe London radio quote an allied pilot as reporting that he saw the Stars and Stripes flying over a French town.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>JUNE 7:<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> General Dwight Eisenhower, who was in charge of Allied planning and gave the go-ahead for the invasion, followed the troops, at one point coming within five miles of the enemy, so that he could better understand what was happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/St.-Georges-Cross-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"St. George's Cross\" width=\"220\" height=\"154\" \/><figcaption>St. George&#8217;s Cross<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">For the occasion, two flags flapped on the ship carrying the general and other military leaders. One was the Saint George\u2019s Cross flag of Admiral Sir Bertram Home Ramsay, Allied naval commander. The other was a flag especially created for the general. The New York Times reported that \u201cour yeoman of signals made this flag: four white stars on a red ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/ArmyGeneral.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/ArmyGeneral.jpg\" alt=\"Army General's Flag\" width=\"131\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Army General&#8217;s Flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">The stars declared that a four-star general was aboard the warship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>JUNE 11:<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> The Boston Globe informed its readers that \u201cunless the Germans can now come up with something that absolutely stupefies the imagination, there\u2019s every reason to believe that our flag is on its way\u2026.Hitler, for the first time in this war, will be meeting something that\u2019s ready for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Eisenhower-speaks-to-D-Day-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Eisenhower-speaks-to-D-Day--300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Eisenhower speaks to D-Day troops\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Eisenhower speaks to D-Day troops<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>JUNE 14:<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/new-york-city-flags\">New York City<\/a>, The Times\u2019 coverage of Flag Day began with this statement: \u201cWith the principles of democracy and freedom symbolized by the Stars and Stripes under attack by dictators, the observance today of Flag Day\u2026is expected to be impressive and widespread. The Flag will be displayed on all public buildings and outside many homes and places of business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">That same day, across the continent in California, the chaplain of the Disabled American Veterans wrote a poem that began:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>Yes, \u2018tis your flag, and my flag;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>To it we must ever be true;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>Your flag, and my flag,<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>With its red, white and blue.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seventy years ago, perhaps the most significant invasion in world history took place \u2013 and flags went along.
