Outdoor BannersOutdoor banners come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and designs. They are used in everything from advertising to home décor. However, flags and banners are far from a new concept. Flags have been used now for over 4,000 years. Some pictures of flags have been seen on ancient Greek coins and Egyptian tomb carvings. Outdoor banners originated from flags as banners are just flags without the pole. However, it is interesting to note that the first flags, called vexilloid, were flag poles without the flags. They were actually made of metal or wooden and contained carvings on them. As time passed, they added fabric to the poles and this is where our flags and outdoor banners got their starts. Since the beginning, flags were used to send a signal. Although some flags were primarily decoration, many flags were symbolic. In fact, knights carried flags into battle to identify themselves since it was hard to tell one knight from another. Today, we use outdoor banners for the same purposes. Often they are created for advertising messages, and sometimes just for decoration. Today, a flag or outdoor banner designer has a tough job. It is their job to display the idea or message in the least amount of space. With outdoor banners, they have to attract attention and still retain a pleasant appearance. It truly is an art and does require some skills in the area of graphic design. Today, flags are made out of many different materials. Outdoor banners are made out of heavier materials including vinyl. They are constructed to endure harsh outside conditions. Many flags have served a powerful purpose. It was the star spangled banner that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that would become our national anthem. In fact, that particular flag is still being displayed in the Smithsonian. |
