In the world of politics it can be confusing for American citizens who want to better understand their country’s political system, as well as get an idea of where people stand on both sides of the aisle. Fortunately, there are sources of information available that can give people the straight news without any opinion thrown into the mix. Political science is a good way to explore the history and dynamics of politics without all of the fluff and spin that often comes with the mainstream media. It’s important for people new to politics, or to those who don’t fully understand it, to be able to get a basic informational run-down before making a decision on which party to belong to, or what they believe is right. Political theory is the root of how politics came to be. Aristotle had many political theories which he incorporated into his teachings so that others could better understand the dynamics. Of course, today’s political landscape is much more complicated and tends to be a lot more divided. The Democratic Party typically believes in bigger government, and that it is the job of the US government to take care of all citizens regardless of their class or situation. On the other side of the aisle, the Republican Party usually encourages free enterprise, and a much smaller government, so that capitalism can take place and businesses can thrive. In the last few decades, there have been new political parties emerging in the United States. The Green Party is one of them. By creating third parties, Americans have a new alternative to the traditional democrat or republican stance. Ralph Nader is a very famous third party leader who has run for president in the last several elections, and has often been credited with making a difference in the final winner by taking votes away from other candidates. Another popular party is the Libertarian Party, who believes in less taxes, smaller government, and expanded civil and individual liberties and rights. The Libertarian Party strongly supports the principles of the US Constitution. There are also a few other third parties trying to make a difference in politics. Over all, in American politics, there are two sides: right and left. For many, it’s a very personal conviction that tends to spark debate and ignite arguments. Conservative talk show host Rush Limbagh is considered to be one of the most outspoken people on the right. Ann Coulter is another staunch Republican who is very outspoken. As for the left, there are plenty of people who lean strongly toward the democratic side. Radio host Mike Malloy is one of them. Of course, international politics play a very important role in the safety of the world and the economy. It’s essential that people understand how politics work and the impact they have on the world so they can then decide where to take a stand. |
