Description: Ron Cobb created an ecology symbol and published it on October 25, 1969, placing it in the public domain. The symbol was a combination of the letters "E" and "O" taken from the words "Environment" and "Organism", respectively. Look magazine incorporated the symbol into a flag in their April 21, 1970 issue. The flag was patterned after the flag of the United States, and had thirteen stripes alternating green and white. Its canton was green with a yellow Theta replacing the similar Cobb symbol. Theta was used because of its historic use as a warning symbol and the symbol would later become associated with Earth Day.
History: As a 16 year old high school student, Betsy Boze (Betsy Vogel), an environmental advocate and social activist that enjoyed sewing costumes and unique gifts, made a 4 x 6 foot green and white "theta" ecology flag to commemorate the first Earth Day. She was initially denied permission to fly the flag at C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. Vogel sought and received authorization from the Louisiana Legislature and Louisiana Governor John McKeithen in time to display the flag for Earth Day.

Earth Flag

Description: The Earth flag is a dark blue field charged with The Blue Marble, a famous NASA photo of the Earth as seen from outer space. It is not an official flag of any kind.

History: The first Earth flag used screen-printing and the colors of the Earth were reversed: the ocean was white and the clouds were blue. With only two colors, one color was for clouds and the other color was for both ocean and land. This image of a later Earth flag shows the correct colors.

And now for what we do here at Gettysburg Flag Works...

  1. Reduce
    1. New efficient lighting utilizing a specular anodize reflector and timed motion sensors has resulted in over a 20% reduction in energy usage. We expect a payback in less than 7 years. This will enable us to return to a lower electric rate.
    2. To increase both employee comfort and reduce energy usage, we are adding insulation to the exterior walls and ceiling of our warehouse facility. The insulation will not only reduce heat load and heat loss, it will improve the work area with a brighter ceiling.
    3. We reduce our waste by using regular dishes rather than plastic and paper ones for our lunches, and by using towels in the bathroom and kitchen instead of paper towels.
  2. Re-Use
    1. We reuse scrap paper that was printed on 1 side by cutting it into squares and using the back of it, instead of buying note paper.
    2. We re-use packing materials and boxes from inventory shipments to send packages to our customers when possible. This also helps reduce the shipping costs for our customers.
    3. When shopping for store supplies, we always bring our recycled cloth shopping bags.
    4. Kraft paper used for printing is reused in stuffing packages.
    5. Nylon fabric scraps generated by the custom sewing department are sold to crafters to use in their projects instead of adding them to the landfill.
  3. Recycle
    1. As our business increase, so did the amount of corrugated cardboard from incoming shipments. All of our waste cardboard is now recycled.
    2. GFW recognizes the importance of a clean environment and with the cooperation of all employees, collects and recycles all plastic and metal containers. Additionally, all metal scrap recovered from worn out flagpole components is recycled.
    3. Electronics recycling. The amount of electronic scrap generated in today's businesses increases with every new or upgraded gadget. At GFW, we make certain that all discarded computers, monitors, phone systems, and the like, are properly recycled to reduce toxic waste in our landfills.
    4. We buy recycled printer paper & recycle as much as possible when we've used it and reused it.
    5. Plastic from our lunch drinks and meals is recycled following community guidelines.
