36 Star Flag
When the Civil War began a suggestion was made to President Lincoln to divide the existing US flag diagonally in half. The idea is that the North would leave the lower portion white and the South would leave the upper portion white. Neither side liked the idea very much. The flag retained the full number of stars and actually added 2 stars in 1861. The flag shown here is the 36 star flag and was used during the last year of the Civil War. (*)

Stars and Bars Confederate flag (first)
While the Union continued to use the previous US flag without any changes, the Confederacy decided to adopt new banners. This is the first of these banners. It was adopted in march 1861 and continued to be used until may 1863. This flag was found to be too close to the Union's flag when flying on the battle field and caused some confusion. It was decided that they needed a new design.(*)

Confederate flag (second)
This flag was the second of the confederate flags flown during the civil war. It was adopted on May 1, 1863. For this design they placed the Battle flag on a white field. This flag was also easily confused, only this one was confused for a white surrender flag when not flying out in the wind. It was replaced on march 4, 1865.(*)

Confederate flag (third)
This flag replaced the former flag on March 4, 1865 because it was too easily mistaken for a white surrender flag. The only change made was to add a red stripe on the fly end of this flag to distinguish it. It only lasted a single month before the war ended.(*)
